Silanes are silicon-based compounds with organo-functional groups that enable them to chemically bond with both organic polymers and inorganic surfaces. This makes silanes extremely useful as adhesion promoters, coupling agents, and surface modifiers across a wide range of materials and industries.

Through hydrolysis and condensation reactions, silanes form strong silicon-oxygen bonds with surfaces such as glass, metal, and minerals. These bonds can significantly improve adhesion, dispersion, moisture resistance, and mechanical properties.

Microscopic View of Silane Performance

The images below illustrate how silanes enhance adhesion between resin and glass fibers in thermoplastic composites.

Without silane: visible adhesive failure between resin and glass fibers. With silane: cohesive bond between resin and glass fibers.
